LEARNING CURVE EXPRESS Stories

The following courageous adults, teens and children were asked by HEAR US to share their stories of homelessness in doubled-up and/or motels so viewers can gain greater understanding of their plight.LCE-logo-tight.jpg

HEAR US attempts to connect the expert with their federal legislators-- Representative and Senators. We will urge legislators to spend the 3-minutes to view their constituent's video and to respond in some way. We will provide the legislators' contact info and post the response.

Laura and her 2 teen sons are homeless in the Franklin area near Johnson County, IN. They stay with others, and have bounced in/out of motels. Laura says,

"We have nothing...but ask 'em (her children) how much money they have...'not a dime, but we have love...'"

HEAR US thinks love is good, but housing and love are better. Sadly, Laura and her sons wouldn't be considered homeless by HUD because they don't fit HUD's definition of homeless.

That needs to change!

Senators:

Evan Bayh, D

Richard Lugar, R

Representative:

Dan Burton, R-5

Legislators' Responses:

Initial conversation with Rep. Burton's staff got cut off by bad cell signal. Will attempt to reconnect.

Cathy and her daughters have struggled with homelessness for over 3 years, bouncing between families' houses, motels and shelters. Cathy has this bleak nomadic situation figured out:

"That situation where you're homeless and not knowing where you're going to be everyday, as a parent makes you feel inadequate..."

Parents have hard enough jobs without the highly-mobile lifestyle that so many are forced to experience. They know it's hard on the kids. They know it's homeless. Will HUD change the definition of homelessness to fit these nomadic families and teens?

HEAR US will work on that!
